“Gabe,” Sadie shouts as soon as we have parked in front of his cabin.

He yanks the door open with a panicked look on his face that turns to relief when he takes us in, seeing that we’re unharmed. Kyle hovers in the entryway, clearly unsure if she should be there or not. Gabe casts a quick glance over his shoulder and steps outside, closing the door behind him.

“What’s going on?” he asks, his spring-green eyes dancing between the two of us. They eventually come to a rest on me, his panic and concern replaced by guilt and regret.

“Show him, Lilly,” says Sadie, shoving me toward Gabe.

I hand him the down jacket. “Smell it.”

When he gets hit with the faint scent of lemongrass that lingers on the material, he lets out an earsplitting roar. “Where did you get this?” he shouts.

I rush to explain my story, and my theory, not wanting Akoda to make an appearance on the doorstep.

“I bought the coat when I went shopping with Bree. That time you lent me your credit card? Anyway, Tahnee was there. She was blocking the counter, so I placed my purchases over her arm. I haven’t had an opportunity to unpack the bag since we bought them, so I’ve never actually scented the clothes. Tahnee touched this coat, Gabe. She’s the murderer, she’s got to be.”

He opens his mouth to speak, but I talk over him. “What’s more, is the link between me and the murder victims. All except Lana, that is.”

“What do you mean?” asks Sadie.

I turn to her, holding up my hand and pointing to each finger as I say, “The murderer targeted Alex after I interacted with her—she was pretty rude to me—I wanted to meet with Greg, but he said no, and I was upset. This was the day before he was murdered. I thought I smelled lemongrass in the diner we stopped at on the way to Billings but put it down to the food. Pops helped me when I turned Bree, then told the alpha, which also hurt me. With every murder victim, I was upset at them before they were murdered.”

“Actually, now that I think about it, Lana was running her mouth about you before she was murdered. Something about not wanting you here because of your link to Opal Ridge,” says Sadie.

“You see? I’m the link,” I say.

“But why would Tahnee—if she is the murderer—want to kill people that hurt your feelings? It doesn’t make sense. She’s more likely to rejoice in your hurt feelings. Someone else must have touched this coat before you bought it,” Gabe says, holding the coat in the air.

“I don’t know. Just… maybe you should question her? Do you know what her scent is?”

He contemplates it for a moment, scratching his head as if to help him think. “I’ve got no idea.”

“Let’s go find out then,” says Sadie, checking her watch. “She’ll still be at the bar.”

“Fine. But be discreet about it. I don’t want anyone knowing we suspect her,” says Gabe.
